Making Roman Shades: Frequently Asked Questions
I have received many inquiries from readers about specific aspects of making Roman Shades. This section contains answers to these frequently asked questions (FAQs). Over my 15-plus years of designing and making Roman shades, I have dealt with almost every conceivable window type. I love to share my experience so that you too can make professional-looking Roman shades. The FAQs are grouped by topic. For a complete list of the questions, go to Summary of FAQs.

There is a separate How To section that provides free step-by-step instructions on making a classic (flat) Roman shade, making a top-down/bottom-up shade, making a top-down only shade and making a window valance.

A. Getting Started Making Roman Shades
This section discusses how you can begin your shade project.
You can read about required skills (such as sewing) and the necessary equipment and tools (besides a sewing machine). I also discuss frequent questions that I receive about "patterns" and use of the on-line directions.

B. Professional Methods for Making Roman Shades
Yes, you CAN make professional shades. You will learn why I use plastic battens in the fold
s, simple pulleys rather than screw eyes, and Velcro instead of staples

C. Designing Pieced Roman Shades
This section discusses issues involved in making art or quilt-block shades.
Several of the discussion items deal with folding a quilt-block shade.

D. Living with Roman Shades
Be sure to browse the topics discussed here, such as blackout lining, insulation concerns and using Roman shades on French Doors.

E. Variations on Classic Shades
Many imaginative variations of the Classic, flat Roman shade have been developed. This section contains descriptions on how to accomplish different looks, such as Tab Top Roman Shades (also called Decorative Rod shades).

F. Installations Tips
Windows aren't just rectangular anymore. I think all of the unusual shapes are wonderful and interesting. And "interesting" would be the same term I would use to describe trying to mount a Roman shade on many of these new windows. Visit this section for lots of tips on installing shades on unusual windows.

G. Questions about Top-Down Shades  NEW
While I have made hundreds of Classic Roman shades, I have only made about two dozen top-down shades. Your questions on these popular shades are helping me clarify my instructions.
