Meet The Artist
Learn about the inventor of pieced Roman shades. Terrell spends her time designing and making commissioned pieced Roman shades, valances and wall hangings. Obtain information on commissioning shades, having Terrell create a design plan that you can sew yourself, or fabricating a Roman shade out of your pieced quilt top. Terrell also thoroughly enjoys interacting with other sewers and helping to figure out the best way to cover their windows with shades. She likes creating sewing instructions for the latest trends, such as top-down shades.

Terrell Sundermann grew up in southwestern Kansas and was taught to sew in early childhood by her grandmother. Terrell received a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Illinois in 1979 and enjoyed gaining experience in manufacturing and technical marketing in several electronics companies in the Boston area. However, her love (and escape) was always making beautiful things with her hands. After making a log-cabin wall hanging, Terrell began experimenting with combining a wall hanging and a Roman shade. Her background in physics proved invaluable as she perfected the functional portion of operating a pieced Roman shade.

When a successful career in high-tech manufacturing failed to fulfill her creative needs, Terrell left the corporate world and founded Terrell Designs in 1993. She now designs and fabricates custom fabric art for windows and walls. Terrell Designs’ clients include interior designers and homeowners. In addition to pieced shades, Terrell designs valances, wall hangings and accessories such as pillows and place mats. Her beautiful shades have been featured in Show Homes in Colorado and Massachusetts and are installed in homes throughout the United States. She has been featured in Sunset Magazine, Better Homes & Garden’s Window & Wall Ideas, Colorado Homes & Lifestyles, The Rocky Mountain News Spotlight Magazine and The Boston Globe Magazine.

Terrell has thoroughly enjoyed creating functional fabric art for her clients and loves sharing her years of experience with sewing enthusiasts. Her book Pieced Roman Shades - Turn Your Favorite Quilt Patterns into Window Hangings, C&T Publishing, 2000 features step-by-step instructions with many inspiring photographs of actual shades. She teaches workshops and lectures on all aspects of designing and making pieced Roman shades. Her unusual way of displaying quilts has been written up in Quilters’ Newsletter Magazine, The Professional Quilter, The American Quilter magazine, and The Quilting Quarterly magazine. Her most recent article appeared in the April/May 2007 issue of Sew News magazine.

Terrell lives in Cherry Hills Village, Colorado with her husband Ned, where they enjoy all aspects of residing in Colorado: skiing, hiking, bicycling and gardening. They have three grown children: Terrell's son Selim and Ned's daughters Shelley and Amy. Recent additions are Shelley's husband, Nikolas, their children Katherine and Trey and Selim's wife, Carol.
